History of Bowling

History of Bowling

The history of bowling can be traced back to the Stone Age. The first evidence of the game was discovered by the British Anthropologist Sir Flinders Petrie and his team of archaeologists in Egypt in the 1930s. He unearthed a collection of objects from a small child?s grave that appeared to have been the primitive form of the game. However, some argue that the game evolved much later than that. William Pehle, a German historian, claimed that the game of bowling originated in Germany around 300 AD. In Germany, the game had its origin as a religious ceremony for determining absence of sin. This game, introduced by the German monks to the masses, flourished as a customary test of faith.

In England, bowling was started as early as the 1100s. Throughout England, several variations of bowling, such as half-bowls, skittles and ninepins, existed during the mid 1300s. But, the first written mention of the game was made by the King Edward III in the year 1366. In this reference, he allegedly imposed a ban on playing this game among his troops because it was distracting the troops from archery practice. Later, during the regime of King Henry VIII, the game gained popularity and was played as a symbol of nobility and social status.

Bowling has been popular in America since Colonial days. During 17th century, English, Dutch and German settlers imported their own version of bowling to America. At that time, the game consisted of nine pins which were regularly played in an area of New York City still known as “Bowling Green”. Connecticut banned ninepins in 1841 because of their gambling implications.

The American Bowling Congress was formed on 9 September 1895 and is credited with standardizing bowling in the United States and organizing official competition. The Women’s Bowling League followed in 1917, under the encouragement of proprietor Dennis Sweeny.

Through the years, the game has changed. A variety of tactics have been developed. The invention of automatic pinspotter in the 1940s revolutionized both the bowling game and industry. Currently, the sport of bowling is enjoyed by 95 million people in more than ninety countries worldwide.

What a Freelance Web Designer Should Consider to Find the Right C...

What a Freelance Web Designer Should Consider to Find the Right C…

For a freelance web designer, it is quite a challenging task to figure out the worth of your time, and it could take some time to learn the cost of the different projects. There could be assignments that, in spite of low payments, take a little of your time, and that makes them worth it, while some other projects would come with a fat paycheck, but could take over life. Hence, in venturing into the world of freelance web designing or development, the key is to figure out the correct rate. Now granted, what you can convince your client to pay you that determines the charge, but there are certain factors that could help you come to your goal rate. To help you figure out the rates as a freelance designer, here are few tips for you:

What the client is really asking for

At the outset, find out the components and features that the client wants. There must be some cost variations between building a personal blog and a website for a large-scale business. A big challenge for a freelancer is finding ways to deal with changes in project scope. Hence, you need to consider the following.

How demanding the client is

You could come across demanding clients, some offers the projects, and only provides answers to your queries, while some others might be micromanaging things all through the project. You need to factor in the second type of clients while charging. However, you need to consider the following as well.

Your skill level

It is important for you to be honest regarding the level of experience that you have with different types of projects. Your expertise may be short of what the client needs, and your level of delivering may not be similar to another designer, or else, you may need some more time and research to perform the task. One thing that needs to be noted is that the better-experienced designers are capable of delivering faster, while payments made to beginners are used up for learning. So, you need to consider the following option.

Charging Hourly

The hourly rates of a designer usually are around $40 on the low-end, while the high-end figure is about $75 (though this figure could be as high as $100 or more for an hour), with $59 an hour as an average.

However, in hourly charging, there are few things that you cannot include. Hence, if there is a need to learn a new skill, you can just discount the hours that are spent in learning, while at other times, billing a flat rate for the project would make more sense. If you make a mistake, you cannot charge for the lost hours. It is justified to bill the lost hours if the client keeps changing his or her requirements. And if the mistake is from your end, or if the client is not satisfied with the work, you better not bill the client, but instead, do some little extra work to deliver, or else offer a discount. Here, it is only your gut and the relationship that you have with your client that matters.

Designers could also charge variable hourly rates depending on the kind of functions that they do (designing, coding, etc.). The hourly rate billing has the advantage in that it is more straightforward to deal with the billing, and also letting the client include some more tasks without any complexity, along with being easy to please without any need for numerous revisions. However, sometimes the client does not find well if the hours spent is running up. Hence, in such circumstances, your option would be the following.

Charging by the project

Your charging could depend on standard packages that include a certain amount of work that you always provide. Usually, a freelance web developer and designer charge depending on the time taken to complete the project (usually, an hourly rate) as calculated from their past experiences and/or the bearing capability of the market. If the hourly or project-based approach does not go well, then you need to consider the following.

Charging by the page

Although a rare payment method, there are some freelance web designers and developers who calculate the cost this way. This would go well for designers creating relatively simple marketing style websites, though this mode of charging should also be considered by designers and developers.

Top Prototyping Tools And The Importance Of Prototyping In Your W…

Did you ever try to work in a straight line from the beginning to the end of a design project? If yes, you may have discovered that your design concept didn’t work out quite as planned. Perhaps, it didn’t even work out at all.

Prototyping is an effective way to prevent such occurrences from happening. Any extra work involved in building a prototype usually pays good dividends!

Prototyping significantly speeds up the design process. Moreover, it helps spot errors that would involve greater expense during later stages.

Finding the right prototyping tool need not take a lot of your time. The three featured here, are the best of the best.

Proto.io

Top Prototyping Tools And The Importance Of Prototyping In Your W...

Both low- and high-fidelity prototypes serve useful purposes. Whether you want verification that your design concept is valid and workable, or you wish to user test your design before handing it over to a developer, Proto.io will be a great choice. It is a powerful and easy-to-use prototyping tool.

You can start using it right away, since design or coding skills are not required to use it.Once you add Proto.io to your toolkit, you’ll be able to do your design and prototyping work, share information, provide previews, and collaborate with project stockholders – all on a single platform.

Proto.io’s Dashboard helps you maintain strict version control and supports your collaboration tasks. The Editor provides the functionality needed to build your prototype(s). The Playerplays an essential role when you need to share a prototype with others, conduct testing, or view change results on your browser.

You have the option of designing a prototype from scratch using the Editor, or importing design and design information from Photoshop or Sketch.

Design Systems by UXPin

Top Prototyping Tools And The Importance Of Prototyping In Your W...

If you’re in the market for an end-to-end UX design tool, UXPin is your best bet. The market is saturated with prototyping tools, but UXPin seems to be the only tool that doesn’t just excel at prototyping, but also tackles the more complex challenges of workflow, design consistency, and developer collaboration.

This cloud-based platform supports the whole UX process in one place: design systems, prototyping, documentation, collaboration, and developer handoffs. UXPin also integrates with Photoshop, Sketch, Jira, and Slack to create a more connected workflow.

One simplified workflow we found useful was creating your design system in UXPin with Sketch assets, then quickly prototyping in UXPin, collecting feedback in UXPin and sharing in Jira, then generating specs and style guides for developers in UXPin.

Fluid UI

Top Prototyping Tools And The Importance Of Prototyping In Your W...

Fluid UI is a user-friendly wireframing and prototyping tool designed to improve communication between web designers, developers and product managers.

Without ever leaving the platform, you can design, start interactive video sessions and chat and comment in real time whether designing or just previewing. Fluid UI is especially effective when working with distributed teams – whether in the same office, or on the other side of the planet, it doesn’t matter.

Fluid UI also contains a comprehensive series of built-in libraries that support wireframe and prototype design, material design, and design on iOS or the web. You can also upload your existing designs.

Three subscription plans are available, but you might first want to see what Fluid UI has to offer by signing up for its single project, “Free Forever” plan. Unlike other tools, Fluid UI also has the advantage of allowing you to store your data for free between projects.

Why Prototyping is so Important

To ensure you’ll accomplish your goals, it’s important to test your ideas as you progress. This is much more preferable than work straight through.

Prototypes provide insight into the performance of a site’s functionality. They tell you when changes are needed to ensure the product will be a pleasure to use.

Prototypes help you:

  1. Define your design goals and ideas, refine them, and allow them to evolve

How to get the maximum benefit from prototypes? You need to create a series of them to check your design as you progress.

This process is often referred to as rapid prototyping. Such approach will help you deliver a high-quality design in less time.

  1. Determine what works, what doesn’t, and what could be made to work better

A cool idea doesn’t always magically morph into a stellar design. If you’re going to make a pitch to a client, it’s not a bad idea to first see if your design idea is practical and feasible. Low-fidelity prototypes are particularly effective in demonstrating the practicality of a design concept.

Once practicality established, further prototyping can be extremely useful. Use it to validate and improve your design’s performance characteristics and functionality!

  1. Identify easy to overlook design errors or problems

You don’t have to wait until user testing to uncover any remaining problems. Doing so can cost you extra in terms of time and money.

Problems detected early on are generally easiest to fix. By using prototypes, you’re more apt to detect problems that would otherwise go unnoticed.

  1. Collaborate and communicate more effectively

Prototypes, especially interactive ones, contain vastly more valuable information than text or slideshows.

Prototyping can reduce a day-long product review meeting to an hour or less in many instances. This is also relevant when communication tools like video or live chat are put into play.

Summary

A prototype can be viewed simply as a useful design aide, but a good prototyping tool offers much more. It does not only speed up the design process! It provides an excellent means for early-on detection of hard-to-find design errors.

Those chosen here, stand for the best of the best in terms of functionality and performance.

Beginning Website Design With HTML (Part 1)

Beginning Website Design With HTML (Part 1)

I am beginning a series of tutorials on HTML, the language that makes websites possible. This is the first part of my series. Enjoy, and leave any questions in the comments!

What does HTML stand for? Hyper Text Markup Language

Ok, now we've got that out of the way. The first thing you need to know is how to make an HTML file. Easy!

If you are on Windows, go to Start> Accessories> Notepad. Open Notepad, then click File> Save As … and type a name to save it as (eg website). At the end of the name include the extension.html so the name looks like website.html . Now, click the Save As Type dropdown menu and select "All files". Then save.

If you are on a Mac, use TextEdit. Open it by either searching it in Spotlight, or going to Finder> Applications> TextEdit. Open it, go to Preferences and make it Plain Text instead of Rich Text. Go to File> Save As …, type a name, and select Web Page (.html) from the File Format dropdown.

That's all there is to it! Your file is now ready to be made into a website! To view it in the browser (although there is currently nothing to view), just right-click the file, open with your favorite browser.

Ok, now onto the coding! First off: In HTML, everything is made up of tags. Tags consist of and everything in between. For example, the opening tag for an HTML file is. The closing tag is the same, except it has a forward slash in front of the word :. You always begin and end HTML documents with the opening and closing tags. Now, between those tags, put in the head tag. It's the same as the html tag, except with the word "head" instead of "html":

The head of your website is where you will put your websites title, and any files your website requires to run. We will get into most of that later; for now, let's just put in the title. Insert the title tag (I hope you've figured out how to do this by now) and close it.

Now, between the title tags, add a title for your website eg: My First Website

Now for the content. Beneath the closing head tag, make the body tag, opening and closing :. The body of your site is where all of the content that people see goes (the title only appears in the title-bar of browsers).

If you want to insert text into the body, use the paragraph tag with your text between the opening and closing tag.

Save your work, and view the site the way I mentioned above.

To add text benefit that paragraph, simply add the paragraph tags again, along with the text inside.

That's all for today's tutorial. By now you should know how to: Create an HTML file, add the site title, and add simple text-content. Come back to see our next tutorials!

Amazing Things

Interview with Julie Anixter, Executive Director of AIGA

Below is an interview with Julie Anixter, Executive Director of AIGA, on the topic of career development, which is the topic of the this year’s annual AIGA Design Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota on October 12-14, 2017.

Also see the free Podcast / YouTube interview with Julie and Ram Castillo here.

Enjoy!

1. Why is career development so important to AIGA?

Careers in design are morphing constantly alongside an evolving industry, which presents a challenge for all designers, new and established. The AIGA community draws from a wealth of experience to help provide foresight on those changes and the other challenges that come with building a career – whether you are trying to find a path forward or grow in your current position.

2. Have you taken any unusual jobs that led to remarkable experiences?

Honestly, making the decision to lead the AIGA was a different path for me. It has introduced me to so many remarkable people and experiences. It’s privilege to serve designers and the design community – which represents unending inspiration and possibility. We want to make sure to harness our members’ and chapters’ extraordinary energy and share it across the US. I’m especially keen on sharing new design experiences at our upcoming Design Conference in October, where we’re focusing on the connecting power of design.

3. Best advice you’ve ever been given regarding your career/or the worst

Don’t waste time in the wrong job, regardless of the temptations that might drive you to accept one or stay longer than necessary. Find a place that provides a good fit for your talents and the opportunity to bring as much of your experience as possible.

4. What advice can you offer those just starting off in design?

When you’re starting off, the best thing you can do is immerse yourself in work from a wide variety of projects, disciplines and designers. A good way to do that is joining organizations or groups such as AIGA which allows you to take advantage of the association’s resources and the membership’s collective knowledge.

5. What is the most important lesson you’ve learned in your career to date?

Courage is stronger than fear.

When you let fear be your main driver, you miss out on life experience, but when you live courageously new opportunities are always on the horizon.

6. How has mentorship made a difference in your professional or personal life?

My mentors travel with me in my head, heart and instincts. (See here for how to get a mentor guaranteed) They make me smile and show up like guides when the going gets rough. Chief among them: my father, Tom Peters, Seth Godin, Admiral Joseph Dyer and Gyongy Laky.

7. How does AIGA help designers looking to move along their desired path?

AIGA helps designers along their career paths through connection and community, first and foremost. It takes resources and the support of a strong network to become a successful designer, and AIGA members have a network of mentors built in. Our members go past just connecting to help each other find answers or jobs, and provide inspiration and stimulation at every point of the journey.

8. What do you want AIGA to accomplish in the next year/five years?

For more than 30 years, AIGA has served as an epicenter for our diverse community of professionals to meet, exchange ideas, and grow the design industry. Our community is our most valuable asset. The strength within our community is fueled by making sure that designers have the competencies to make an impact on business, industry, and society. Over the course of the next couple of years, we are really focusing on career journeys and the myriad of possibilities evolving out of design’s ever-changing landscape.

5 Reasons to Use a Male "Enhancement" Pill!

5 Reasons to Use a Male "Enhancement" Pill!

No matter how much you deny, the fact that intimacy is one of the most important parts of a love-relationship can never be denied. When you make love with your partner, you give her all that you have within you – from your soul to the deepest feelings that you possess for her.

However, there are a few men, who are unable to express themselves properly in bed. This leads to a lot of complications in their lives. This is where a male enhancement pill comes into the picture.

If you are wondering why you need such a pill, following are the top five reasons that support the same:

  1. To gain self-confidence – When you are good in bed, your partner is happy and satisfied with you; when your partner is pleased, you feel happy, which leads to creation and development of self-confidence in your heart. There’s absolutely nothing else that can make you feel good, than keeping your partner happy.
  2. To keep away from all the problems in your relationship – I am sure you are going to agree with me when I say that being good in bed helps you strengthen your relationship. When you know how to do things the right way, you have less of problems with your partner. No doubt minor problems are bound to arise, but if you are good in bed, you can always bring a smile on her face at the end of the day.
  3. To get a nice woman in life – If you are not married already and want to get a warm-hearted woman in your life, you’ve got to show your charms in bed. To do so, you surely need a male enhancement pill, which allows the beast in you to come out and explore the beauty in front of you.
  4. To have a long-lasting ‘climax’ – Who wants to get it done in five or ten minutes? You surely need more energy and more erection to make it last for long. If this is what you want, you can get it with the help of a pill that helps you enjoy a longer session of intimacy.
  5. To win your partner forever – Unless you give her all the pleasures in bed, you can’t expect her to stick with you forever. To win her for all your life and turn her into your wife, you surely need such a pill.

It is time for you to gain confidence and please her in the most beautiful manner!
